ABOUT US
Khalsa Lions was formed in June 2008, to participate in the inaugural Victorian Punjabi Federation League. After having great success in the league, the team decided to enter Khalsa Lions into the National Sikh Games 2009.
Khalsa Lions went on to become the champions at their first attempt at the National Sikh Games which were held in Coffs Harbour. Later in the year, Khalsa Lions also became champions of the Shaheedi Tournament at Griffith 2009. Add to this Khalsa Lions won the VPF League that same year to record the ‘Treble’ in its first full year of competition.
In early 2010 Khalsa Lions toured South-East Asia, where they played the strongest teams in the area, including S-League team Woodlands Wellington FC in Singapore and M-Super League team Selangor FA and the Malaysian Under-21 National Team. Khalsa Lions also played JCT Football Club from the I-League in India.
In 2011, Khalsa Lions formed a youth academy, and the emergence of a very talented Junior team was evident when they went onto win the 2011 National Sikh Games at their first attempt.
The senior team had now won their 2nd National Sikh Games Championship.
In 2013 Khalsa Lions co-hosted the National Sikh Games in Melbourne. This event is the biggest in the Sikh/Punjabi calendar. The games were hailed as the best ever in the 27 year history of the National Sikh Games. Khalsa Lions added a 3rd National Sikh Games Championship to their impressive list of Honours and a couple of Junior championships as well.
In 2014, Khalsa Lions won back to back National Sikh Games at Perth. That was now 4 Championships out of 6 attempts. Khalsa Lions was by far the most successful team in that era.
From 2015 to 2017, Khalsa Lions junior teams dominated the National Sikh Games. The U15s won 3 consecutive cups; with the U10s and U13s winning 2 each during the same period. These junior teams have now become the backbone of the senior team.
From 2015 to present, the club has enjoyed further success winning a further 2 Shepparton Tournaments, a Griffith Tournament, another 2 VPF Tournaments, a couple of VICSOCCER Summer Leagues and just recently the Regional ANSSACC tournament in early 2021. During the same period, our junior teams continue to win array of tournaments from the National Sikh Games, to the VPF Tournament and everything in between.
To add to the on-field success, the club again led the way in organising the 2019 Annual Sikh Games. These games were the biggest to date in terms of sports, participants and spectators.
The club also hosts the annual VPF Invitational Cup, which is second only to the Sikh Games when it comes to Punjabi/Sikh soccer tournaments in Australia. We have participating teams from overseas, interstate and local; across all age groups. This tournament first commenced in 2008 in a league format, but in 2010 was transformed into a cup tournament. The VPF Invitational Cup is held on the first weekend of October.
With the ever-growing number of players, Khalsa Lions recently entered in 2 senior teams into the Winter League. This allows the players and the club to continue playing throughout the year in readiness for all the Sikh/Punjabi tournaments they compete in. It also provides a great support network for the clubs members and a social family gathering every weekend.
The club is very proud of the fact that they compete in all major Sikh/Punjabi tournaments throughout the year, as it allows us the opportunity to remain involved in our community and support its growth.
In our very brief history, Khalsa Lions has gone from strength to strength on and off the field. The club has now won over 20 major trophies (Seniors and Reserves) and over 25 major junior trophies. The club has achieved so much in such a short time because of their dedication and passion for football. It is undoubtedly one of the strongest football clubs in Australia presently.
